Abstract
Cardiac transplantation, first performed in 1967 but virtually abandoned in the 1970s. is now a well-accepted therapy for end-stage heart disease. Survival rates of 85 to 90% are standard in centers around the world. Which was obviously obtained
from
the use of cyclosporine, improved diagnostic techniques, more favorable selection criteria, and new agents for the treatment of infection. Multidrug therapy has provided the most favorable results. However, none of the current immunosuppressant
drugs,
including cyclosporine, are without side effects and complications that may be fatal. Morbidity andmortality are from rejection and infection during the first year period and from accelerated graft arteriosclerosis after the first year. The
purpose
of
this report is to introduce the current status of cardiac transplantation at the University of Arizona Heart Tranplant Center. With current quadruple immunosppressant therapy of rabbit antithymocyte globulin, cyclosporine azathioprine, and
steroid,
the
actuarial survival rate has been 94% at 1 year. 91% at 2 year. And 88% at 3 years respectively for the past 7 years.
